Frequently Asked Questions

Singing

Where can I find the music?

Please visit the Files section of the website for all sheet music. If you are in the choir you will select the full score. If you are singing one note, there is no music.

What do I wear?

Wear anything that is appropriate. Avoid anything with words on it as it will take away from the focus of the video.

Where should I record?

You may record in any non-distracting space. We prefer a neutral background if possible in a space with little to no echo. You must be alone to avoid any background noise. Visit our video/photo specs page for more information about recording spaces.

Can someone hold the camera for me?

This is not recommended. Rest your camera on a tripod or any object that will prop up the device. If this is not an option, you may have someone record but the video must not be shaky and they cannot move while recording.

Can I sing with other people?

No. Only one person should be heard and seen per submission.

Can I submit for more than one category?

Yes! We encourage everyone to participate as much as they want? If you want to sing a solo and join the choir, or even the orchestra, we invite you to submit multiple flies.

How can I practice?

Using your music and our soundcloud practice tracks, you will have the chance to listen and sing along to your part in multiple ways. The practice tracks will include one track with your part sung alone, one track with all parts played softly and your part played the loudest, and one track with all the parts at the same volume.

How will my video be used?

For the majority of the performance, the large ensembles will be shown. Each video submission will be shown together, some more than others. If you are a person of color, we may show your video more than others. This will be done in order to give you a chance to speak about something that affects you. If you are not a person of color, we will design the video in ways to portray you as an ally to the BLM movement. The soloist will be bigger than most videos in order to be the main focus.

Which voice part should I sing?

There are many voice parts to chose from and if you’ve never been in a choir you might not know which one to choose. In general, females and other related high pitched voices sing Soprano and Alto. The high voice parts ranked from highest to lowest are Soprano 1, Soprano 2, Alto 1, and Alto 2. For males and other low pitched voices commonly sing Tenor and Bass. The low voice parts ranked from highest to lowest are Tenor 1, Tenor 2, Bass 1 and Bass 2. Keep in mind there are exceptions to these suggestions so if you are still confused, sing along with each part and determine which part is the most comfortable for your voice to sing. If you have a wide range that makes it too difficult to pick one, flip a coin!

Dance

What do I do?

Create a 10 second video of you dancing to a particular section of the music. While you are recording, we ask that you have the practice tracks playing out loud in the video. This will help us sync your video with the musicians.

What do I wear?

Wear anything (as long as it is appropriate)! If you are looking to be unique, wear something that relates to your dance style. Avoid anything with words on it as it will take away from the focus on you.

Where should I dance?

Dance anywhere that is spacious enough to accommodate you! Remember this is an auditioned video so it's important to make your video as spectacular as possible. Don't worry if the best place you can find is your backyard, this is just a suggestion.

Can someone hold the camera for me?

Yes! So feel free to use your space so they can follow along with you. The only thing we ask is that you make sure the video does not appear shaky, as it will take away from the performance. If no one can record for you, it is fine to record yourself.

Can I dance with other people?

YES! We encourage lots of participation in this project. Sadly, COVID-19 makes it hard for large groups to be together. It is your responsibility to determine if it is safe to be with a certain crowd (we'll still love your video even if you are wearing masks).

How will my video be used?

Throughout the video, the large ensembles will be shown for the majority. In certain spots, we will show your video on the screen alone (subject to change) to ensure you will be the main focus.

Visual Art

What do I do?

Artists are encouraged to create something that portrays or relates to the following ideas: -The injustice of police brutality -The ratification of racism -A more unified society -Love among people who look different -Modern day slavery (the oppression of black people by white supremacists) -Anything that will educate people about injustice and inspire change for an equal society

Can I be in the photo with my art?

No, unless you are part of the artwork. It is essential that the content is the main focus.

What style of art is the best to submit?

Any style is welcome. If your work involves movement, please submit a maximum 10 second video. Otherwise, submit a picture.

How will my video/picture be used?

Throughout the performance, the large ensembles will be shown for the majority. In certain spots, we will show your video/photo on the screen alone (subject to change) to ensure it is the main focus.
